Why Cheerleading?

Cheerleading is currently one of the fastest growing sports in Canada and there's so many reasons why!  This sport incorporates many aspects that contribute to the overall development of an athlete: acrobatic stunting, tumbling, dance, teamwork, and goal setting. Cheerleaders develop agility, confidence, rhythmic movement and an appreciation for physical fitness.

Cheerleading is a safe sport. In Alberta, cheerleading programs require their coaches to be certified within the Alberta Cheerleading Assocation or the International All Star Federation Coaches Certification that stresses the importance of safety and proper skill developement.

Cheerleading is for everyone!  You can find teams for athletes as young as 4 years old up to adult!  A participant can participate for many years in a variety of different levels and divisions based on age and ability. No matter the level of involvement, one thing is certain: a cheerleader will have fun and enjoy a level of fitness.

Types of Cheerleading

Alberta offers three separate types of Cheerleading: School, All Star and Pom/Dance.  These are then further broken down into levels based on age and skill levels.  Please see 'Safety' for a further breakdown of the divisions.

School Cheerleading: Athletes are on a team based out of their school, which will often cheer for other school teams/sports and compete at cheer competitions.  Competitive routines are two and half minutes long and include acrobatic stunting, tumbling, dancing and a cheer.

All Star Cheerleading: All Star cheerleaders do not cheer for a specific school or sports team.  They are typically based out of a gymnastics club or a separate facility.  Athletes work towards perfecting a two and half minute routine, which includes acrobatic stunting, tumbling and dancing.
